Piano
History
Started learning piano when I was very young. First, from a nun at Assissi Heights, later from Mrs. Wright.
I was only learning it because my mother insisted. I did have an interest in music, and making it, however.
I enjoyed playing the piano, but not the lessons.
Later, toward the end of highschool, I started to learn pieces for piano just for fun.
I enjoyed challenging myself with the piano pieces from Final Fantasy 9 (despite never having played it).
In University, I continued playing for fun, and would sometimes use the practice rooms in the music building between classes.
I took another long break from piano after moving to Canada, preferring to play bass guitar, for the most part.
I played bass in a band for a while, but after the band disbanded, I found myself drawn to piano again.
I played piano at my sister's wedding:
- "Love Like You", by Rebecca Sugar.
- "De Colores", in the style of Raffi en Espanol
Direction of Learning
I've recently begun learning Jazz music theory, mostly from Charles Cornell's youtube channel.
Additional expanding my classical music theory and listening skills, I've enjoyed creating piano covers of songs that I enjoy, especially by King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard.
I'm currently trying to learn how to read from Lead Sheets, with my first attempt being "Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood" by Fred Rogers. I've done a pretty good job of developing voicings for the chords that I enjoy, but I'm still not playing it confidently at speed.
I've also learned some Wayne Shorter, and I have developed a version of "Yes or No" that I enjoy playing quite a bit.
I'd like to get to the point of being able to play nice voicings on first-sight of a lead sheet. Maybe in 10 years or so.
